With the weather cold and rainy, we have been more willing to venture out in the car for lunch, rather than taking advantage of places within walking distance. Today we headed out for Original Donut Shop, which apparently also sells a variety of tacos and Mexican specialties. Hoping that the long line of cars heading into the drive-thru was a good sign, we found a place to park and went in.
And were pretty much met with apparent chaos. People were standing around in every little space, every tiny table was crammed with people, and and we stood for a second in stunned silence trying to figure what we were getting ourselves into. We gravitated toward the line with the donuts – fewer people. I chose a glazed yeast donut covered in chocolate and vanilla frosting, while Justin went with his go-to favorites: a sugar twist, an apple fritter, and a coconut covered cake donut. With that bagged up, we edged our way over the the “Order Tacos Here” sign. We decided on two Beef Fajita Tacos and two Carne Guisada tacos (and by “decided” I mean, completely guessed at what to order!). After a substantial wait, our order came up and we headed back to the apartment to eat in a bit of peace.
Turns out, all those gazillions of people were there for a good reason, and we were glad we stuck to our guns and were willing to wait. The tortillas were handmade and extremely fresh, a bit thicker and chewier than we’re used to, which I love love love. The beef and onions in the fajita taco were incredibly tender and flavorful, and the same can be said about the meat in the Carne Guisada taco (which is a thick stew filling). The donuts were terrific as well. Very fresh, with a crackly sweet glaze and a light, airy interior. And while we questioned tacos and donuts at first, now we can’t imagine anything that makes more sense!
