Getting our Fill of Minneapolis

We had been looking forward to this week for quite awhile.  Back in January we were able to get tickets for Snow Patrol‘s North America tour, and I had just recently found out that Ed Sheeran was touring with and opening for them.  Being able to catch great British bands is pretty rare here in the Midwest, so we were looking forward to the opportunity to see these musicians live.

And the concert certainly did not disappoint.  Ed Sheeran is still a relative new comer to America’s music scene (his album doesn’t even release until next month), but he is a fantastic performer and a very talented musician.  A lot of the comments around us transformed from  ”Who is this guy? I’ve never heard of him,” to “This is great!  I love this guy!”

And Snow Patrol was a treat to see live.  Apparently the lead singer, Gary Lightbody, is having issues with his voice and throat and he wasn’t able to sing a number of the songs planned for their set, but they really made up for it by playing more of the songs from their older albums, which I thoroughly enjoyed.  Hopefully his voice will recover as the tour progresses, it would be sad if they had to cancel any of the future shows.

Plus, an evening in Minneapolis is always going to mean a good meal out, and as my cousin Mike recently joined the team of chefs at HauteDish we were looking forward to reconnecting with him over a good meal.  I had some fun making these silly HauteDish pig cookies for him to share with the staff.  Mike actually had the evening off work, so he and his girlfriend Jen were able to sit down and join us for the meal, rather than preparing it.  We had such a good time talking “shop” with them, about restaurants, food preparations, cookbooks, great meals, etc.  And we really had our socks blown off by the incredible food that found its way to our table.  We had enjoyed a meal here last year with Trav and Emily, but the exceptionally skilled staff is really starting to show off (in a good way!).

Mike ordered off the menu for us, plus the kitchen sent out a few extra dishes for us to try and enjoy.  The starter salad was a take on a classic wedge salad, but was super fresh and crisp, with the best bleu cheese and french dressings ever.  He also requested the Char-Cuts plate, but the chef definitely went overboard and sent out the most impressive 2 foot long board of charcuterie we have ever seen.  There were even a few items on the board that Mike hadn’t seen yet.  We all devoured it, exclaiming over different bites as we went.  HauteDish definitely deserves its title as the best place in Minneapolis for charcuterie.

The kitchen then sent out a few warm appetizers, Green Noodles (pictured above) and Peas and Toast.  The homemade noodles married beautifully with the ricotta salata spheres, which burst open with the pressure of your fork, oozing the milkiness through the noodles, similar to a poached egg.  And never have mashed peas on a piece of toast tasted like what they prepare at HauteDish.  Granted, I can swear to you that I have never thought mashed peas on anything would be considered “good,” but these fresh, super sweet green peas were excellent with asparagus, pecorino cheese and foam, and house-smoked sturgeon on a slice of toasted brioche bread.

Mike had also ordered us two entrees to share, knowing the size of these dished would be impossible to tackle on one’s own.  And wow-za!  These two plates nearly took up the width of the table!  Mike and Jen shared the Rabbit and Carrots (and made sure we tried a few bites as well!) and Justin and I shared the Colorado Lamb Three Ways.  Mike had been telling us this was the best lamb he had ever had, and after taking a bite, we were quick to agree.  The meat on the chops was like the finest filet mignon we’ve had, except the fact that it wasn’t beef!  The care and attention that is going into all of the components of these dishes is really remarkable.  We had to pass on dessert for two reasons, yes, we had a concert to go to, but also because our stomachs might have exploded.  HauteDish doesn’t promise you an easy, light meal.  But a dinner that is uber rich, spectacularly delicious, and pushing the boundaries of what “classic Midwestern fare” is?  Absolutely.

Packing and Peace.

My organizational brain is in overdrive today.  Trying to figure out how to fit three months worth of clothing into these few bags is just as tricky as a thousand-piece jigsaw puzzle, though I think it may just come down to sheer force.  I’m already thinking that packing the car with everything later this evening will be less of a struggle than packing each individual bag!

But amidst the craziness that is the apartment (and my mind) we took some time out this afternoon to visit the Japanese Tea Garden, near the San Antonio Zoo.  It really is a tranquil, beautiful little park, especially when there are less than a dozen other people sharing the space with you.

All the stonework is intricate and quite impressive.  The bridges and pathways gently meander through the ponds and gardens.  The Koi fish in the ponds are substantial, but not overwhelming (unlike the stinky feeding fish in practically every body of water at the Zoo!).

The large main canopy at the entrance provides an abundance of shade, and I am sure the unique space can be seen in all sorts of wedding, engagement, and graduation pictures!

The garden isn’t a huge space, and it doesn’t take all that much time to wander over the paths, but it was just the right size to get outside, enjoy the warm sun and fresh air, and find a few minutes of peace before jumping back into the land of Packing.

San Antonio Zoo – Two Thumbs Up!

Justin makes a new friend in the Butterfly exhibit!

Justin and I decided to check out the San Antonio Zoo this afternoon, and we’re so glad we did!  We were very impressed with the huge variety and sheer numbers of animals in the Zoo’s collection.  And while it was a very very large zoo (3rd largest in the country) it was laid out nicely and was very easy to meander through and see everything in a few hours.  We would highly recommend anyone visiting the San Antonio area to check out the zoo, and if you can get in during an off time, such as a the middle of the week, there aren’t quite so many strollers to navigate around.

An Okapi, the legs of a zebra, the body of a deer, and the head of a giraffe!

The elusive white rhino...

The zoo had multiple varieties of flamingos, all very active!

A small cuttlefish in the aquarium exhibit.

A very camouflaged chameleon. We called him Peeta from The Hunger Games.

There were hundreds of butterflies in the butterfly enclosure. It was crazy to see so many different varieties all just inches away!

Speaking of inches away...

Snow Cone time! Justin went with "Tiger's Blood".

And I choose pineapple.

A Lory. One thing that we were impressed by was how interactive many of the exhibits were. You could get so close to some of the animals and birds, and even feed some nectar or pellets.

A 4 year old Komodo Dragon.

Up close and personal with this Leaf-tail Gecko.

Another lizard giving Justin the stink-eye.

Quite the interesting colors on this bird!

Another close, interesting-looking bird.

There were hundreds of species of birds at the zoo. This zoo definitely had so much more than your typical lions, tigers, and apes. So many animals that we had never seen before!

Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch – cue hilarity.

Headed over to Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch today. At the entrance, we weren't sure if this was going to be awesome, or a huge bust.

Why is the "Jurassic Park" theme song playing in my head?

Okay. This was about to get interesting!

Why, hello... (with a finger ready on the window controls!)

This deer knew Justin had more food in the car. She wasn't content after the first handful and stuck her head right inside the car!

Buddy and this ram eyeing each other up.

It was so crazy how close these animals got (and how much food they could put away).

Baby!

Justin feeding a Gemsbock Antelope.

And then it posed for him.

Wildebeest, walking along with the car.

There were some very pretty, animal-free spots along the Safari route as well.

A kudu, with some very impressive curly antlers.

And then there were some seriously aggressive ostrich. These buggers knew there was food in the cars and were definitely going to get it!

Justin, trying to appease the ostrich by giving it the whole bag.

"You Shall Not Pass!"

Llama. Fuzzy llama.

The emu were much more self-controlled than the ostrich!

Though they are still slightly unnerving this close up!

DEFINITELY go to Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch if you are in the San Antonio area.  It was an absolutely riot.

Segway Tour of San Antonio

Oh my goodness, what a memorable day!  As a fun gift for my birthday, Justin’s parents booked us a Segway Tour of San Antonio.  As it was also Travis and Emily’s spring break from teaching, we booked two more slots in the group for them as well, to share in the laughs and adventure.

We really didn’t know what to expect, other than looking a bit dorky wearing bike helmets while riding a Segway.  And that certainly did happen immediately, but after a short 5 minute orientation at SegCity of San Antonio, we were all riding Segways down the sidewalks of downtown San Antonio.

We were all impressed by how incredibly easy it was to control the Segway, and how little effort it took to speed up, slow down, and maneuver around.  It only took a few minutes before Trav and Justin were weaving in and out of the line and speeding past Em and I, all the while eating gummy coke bottles and twin cherries candies.

Our guide lead us over to Hemisfair Park to get away from the crowded sidewalks for a bit.  As there were still quite a few people around the Tower of the Americas, instead he choose to take us a bit further to the Alamodome, where we were really able to get a feel for the Segways, racing and playing around the sidewalks and open spaces.

It was such a fun experience, and we definitely had lots of laughs.  Thank you again, John and Sarah!

Last weekend

This past weekend, we were in charge of Maureen on Saturday and Sunday while her parents were in Illinois.  We went up to Wausau to look at the chalkfest artwork and then head over to the airport for the balloon rally and “ribfest”.  It’s a weird combination of stuff to do, but it totally worked and we had a blast.

The chalkfest art was amazing to look at.  A lot of people were covered in dark chalk and looked to have sore knees from bending over to the ground all day.

Our friend Erin was doing Bambi

This "Up" drawing turned up pretty amazing

Adventure Time!

After chalkfest, we drove over the downtown Wausau airport for ribs, balloons, and fireworks.  We parked at Julie’s aunt and uncle’s house (Ruth and Greg) and walked on over to the airfield.  We were presented with 5 giant rib booths.  Each had signs that were easily 20 feet high, advertising their awards and what they offered.  We got some cheese curds and then waited in line for a sampler platter with brisket, pulled pork, ribs, chicken, and then another 1/2 rack of ribs, just in case.  We polished all of the food off pretty easily.  While we were waiting in line, I saw they were offering bi-plane rides, so I grabbed Maureen and we went up in a plane over Wausau, which was a pretty amazing view of where I grew up.

Rib booth signs

Greatest grill *ever*

In the plane

After the plane ride, we waited until it got dark to watch the fireworks.  Unlike “safe”, normal fireworks, these are large fireworks shot off only a couple of hundred feet from the audience.  The wind was blowing back to us, so a lot of the fireworks were going off directly above us, which was *awesome*.  Julie’s cousin Laura actually got hit by shrapnel and there was lot of ash and still-smoldering pieces of paper falling around us the whole time.

It was a bit too windy for the balloons to take off, but a few of them inflated for a few minutes

Favorite Days of 2010

We had many great days in Minneapolis this year - this picture was taking during the first one - a weekend away with Jenn and Jim in February.

What I remember a lot about Justin over 2010 was him putting together IKEA furniture. The process might not have always been the most fun, but getting a brand new kitchen installed by my husband ranks high in my list of favorite moments of 2010.

Justin has tried so many new sodas in the past year that it is hard to keep track. But it is always cool to find ones he hasn't tried, and to discover new favorites.

During our trip to Houston in July, one of our favorite days began by going blueberry picking with Katie and Emily. Pouring rain, 100% humidity, and scratches a-plenty, but gosh did we laugh a lot!

We so enjoyed driving over to Amish Country in Indiana, and seeing Isaac and Dyani get married. It was such a beautiful, fun day!

The King family came over to watch the Corn on the Curb festival from our roof. Another beautiful day with some of our favorite people.

Mom and I drove down to Milwaukee to spend a weekend with Jean, and to visit Aunt Lousie in Illinois. It was such a fun time with family, and remembering the times we would come down when I was a kid.

Despite Justin's face showing the contrary, we had such a fun time meeting Joseph, Mark, Phyllis and Jean in Milwaukee for a Brewers game.

While we had a lot more responsibilities this year at the TCO, it is still one of the highlights of our year. We met and spent time with such fantastic people!

Driving over to Minneapolis with Doug and Maureen for the Sufjan Stevens concert was definitely a favorite day for me. I had no idea what to expect from the concert, and was blown away by how great it was.

Oh yeah. And we opened the shop. Good Day.

This year I started helping as a student ministries leader for 7th grade girls at our church. One of the early nights was a evening out bowling with them. It was fun, and I love 'em.

Christmas Eve is always one of my very favorite days. It is hard to describe how much my family means to us.

Justin and I took some time out the day after Christmas to explore his parents acreage on snowshoes. It was a beautiful, crisp winter day, and it was nice to have some quiet time together.

Sufjan Stevens @ the Orpheum Theater

In addition to going to Las Vegas and opening a business this week, we also had tickets to see Sufjan (pronounced Soof-yon) Stevens at the Orpheum Theater in downtown Minneapolis.  We originally were planning to go with our friends Doug and Rachel, but their daughter’s sudden illness required Rachel to stay home. To fill in for Rachel, we invited Maureen to join us.  And though she had never heard of Sufjan Stevens, she jumped at the chance to go to Minneapolis with three adult friends, and her first big concert.

We parked across the street from the theater, and then walked to The Local for a bite to eat.  The Local is set up like a traditional Irish pub.  It is a massive restaurant, with tables, chairs, and booths set in all sorts of nooks and crannies, accentuated by heavy, dark, ornately carved wood.  They have a wide selection of beer on tap and the food is pretty delicious.

After dinner we walked back to the Orpheum and waited a bit for the doors to open and get our seats.  Our seats were in the second balcony.  While pretty far away from the stage, they still offered a remarkably good, clear view.  The concert was pretty incredible.  Sufjan had a wider variety of multimedia aspects added to his music, and his current album is overflowing with originality and electronics.  No picture we took could do it justice, but here is a pretty good Youtube video of one of the songs (“Too Much”) he played (this was filmed at an earlier concert in Toronto).  We arrived home around 3 am, exhausted, but all glad we fit this into our busy schedules!

Girly Cupcakes

On Monday morning friends Madie and Abi came by the shop to decorate cupcakes.  Abi had seen an article in her American Girl magazine showing steps to make faces with cupcakes, and asked if we could try our hands at it.  I baked up the cupcakes the evening before and had candies, sprinkles, and frosting ready for them when they arrived.

In short, it was an explosion of sugar and color and general silliness.  We began by trying to replicate the pictures in the magazine, but then decided to rely on our own creativity and the candy and supplies we had in front of us.

The three of us had a great time, and the girls were excited to take their creations home.

I also learned some decorating and organizational lessons from working with the girls, and look forward to planning another decorating day soon!

Once upon a time…

I used to have this blog, see.  And I was pretty good about writing and posting regularly, see.  And then I thought about starting a bakeshop, see.  And now I just want to go to bed or sit on the couch like a lump.  Don’t get me wrong.  We’ve been busy.  Way busy.  Too busy.  But in a good way busy.  Going to IKEA to get another van load of furniture.  Making cookies and cakes for baby showers.  Trying to remember and keep appointments.  Catching up with friends and family.  And so the blog dropped on the list of priorities.  And then I start receiving emails and comments inquiring as to what the heck is going on with us.  So here I am.  After a long hiatus, I’m back and ready to fill you in.

Two weeks ago I went up to Wausau to take my mom’s post for the Fill-A-Back workday.  I met up with Ruth and Shelley and we helped unload a bus, trucks, and vans filled with donated school supplies.

We sorted notebooks and folders by color, organized backpacks, and filled bags with the supplies kids will need to start the school year.  It was a nice cool day, though we all warmed up pretty quickly as we worked hard to get the supplies in order.

It was great to see the generosity of so many, wanting to help all children start a new school year on equal footing.  We even caught glimpses of ourselves on the news that evening!
