A Celebratory Weekend in Minneapolis

This past Friday became a bit of a milestone for us.  We closed on the sale of the building in Stevens Point, lifting a substantial amount of stress from our shoulders.

no longer our concern…

The next day we took off for a night in Minneapolis, feeling freer than we have in months.  And the weekend was pretty much as lovely as could be.  The weather was perfect for fall, sunny, bright, warm but with just the right amount of chill in the mornings and evenings.  We had such a fun dinner out on Friday.  We met up with my cousin Brian and his wife Melissa at HauteDish, where our cousin Mike is one of the chefs.  I brought chocolate sandwich cookies for Mike and the other chefs, and in return they sent out such a bounty of delicious food (a small sampling is pictured below).

Pretty much the best tomato soup I have ever had, served with an incredible little toasted cheese crouton and foie gras.

A fun, deliciously spicy pumpkin stew sent to our table from the kitchen.

Duck 4 Ways, plus kimchi and some incredible sauces.

HauteDish’s take on Apple Pie. Deep fried with cinnamon ice cream? A thousand times Yes!

We were also able to get tickets to the Ben Folds Five concert that was taking place at the Orpheum Theater.  We were very exited about this concert, as the group hasn’t released an album or toured together since we were in college.  I was also exited to see and hear the opening act, Kate Miller-Heidke, as our Aussie friend Mylo had introduced me to her music over a year ago.  Both sets were phenomenal, and these artists definitely know how to interact with the crowd.

Kate Miller-Heidke, easily winning over the Minneapolis crowd.

Ben Folds Five had the Main Floor crowd up on its feet for the majority of the show. We were glad we were up in the balcony with the normal(boring) people that stayed seated.

On Sunday morning, after spending a substantial amount of time in the hotel’s fitness center, we headed over to Edina to meet up with our friends Mark and Kerry and their boys for lunch at the Original Pancake House.  I’m pretty sure there is a picture of Riley and Logan in the dictionary next to the definition of “Energy” and it was fun to interact with them and catch up with Mark and Kerry.  From lunch we headed over to IKEA (went in for ONE thing and walked out with four, but in under 35 minutes, so that was counted as a victory) and then over to the Mall of America to waste some time.  We both decided we needed some quiet after a bit, so we headed over to Rustica for a piece of sugary bread and an espresso (for Justin) and a Chai latte (for me).  It was nice to relax and read a bit before dinner.  And because it had been 3 months and we were starting to suffer withdrawal symptoms, we knew we had to fit in supper at Piccolo.  I think Justin is putting up a link to see the pictures of all the dishes we enjoyed, but here are a few of my favorites from the evening.

Brioche and Foie Gras… Why yes, I would like a foie gras sandwich, thank you!

Acorn Squash Pasta, ham, and truffled cheese. Taking a picture was far from the first thing I thought of when this dish was set in front of me. Get in my belly!

Duck breast with Roman Gnocci and fig and pistachio mustard. Assembling a bite with each component was key – definitely equaled more than the sum of its parts!

We typically pass on the cheese plate at restaurants, but decided to go ahead with it for this meal. And we were so glad we did. The three cheeses, a goat’s milk cheese, and English Cheddar, and an Italian Taleggio were all phenomenal (though we both were partial to the taleggio) and the poached pears, fig jam, and fresh figs paired beautifully. Definitely worth giving up the precious space left in our tummies!

We arrived home late on Sunday night, with very full bellies and very happy hearts.  It is so nice to feel settled into this new routine of ours living in Wausau.  And it was so nice to celebrate the end of this time of transition with a short trip to one of our favorite cities.

A New Post

It’s November.  I am a little bit in shock over this.  It shouldn’t be November.  September, maybe, but certainly not November.  I feel like every day of the last two months only lasted about 42 seconds.  I know the last few weeks were pretty packed.  Go to Las Vegas, go to Minneapolis 76 times, open the bake shop, bake birthday cakes, baby shower cookies, and dozens upon dozens of cupcakes and cake pops, vote, and then grimace at the results, and start baking again.  And with a new business, busy is good.  And we’re doing very well.  Which I’m over the moon about.  I am certainly not complaining about being busy.  I am by far NOT the busiest person I know.  But I am much busier than I have been in quite awhile, being busy at something I love.  I think I’m pretty spoiled, in fact.  Well, let’s go with “blessed,” that sounds so much better. :)  And in the midst of the busy, I’m feeling really humbled and thankful.  I absolutely 100% could NOT be where I am today without the oodles of support and love and help given by Justin, and by our amazing family and friends.  I can hardly describe what it feels like to have the kitchen completed and the bake shop open to customers.  Pretty remarkable.  We were interviewed by a reporter for the local newspaper last week and they asked for pictures of the renovation process.  And so I spent about an hour going back through blog posts and sending them the links, reading and jogging my memory about each step.  I do not miss the Drywalling Step.  I can’t believe we survived the Drywalling Step.  I didn’t have a kitchen sink for Three Months!  I barely remember that.  I definitely remember the trips to IKEA, biting my nails on the drive home, praying the tires on my in-laws’ minivan wouldn’t explode from the weight of our purchases.  In a couple of weeks, when we go back to Minneapolis (because it’s been about 17 hours since we were there last and we’re feeling antsy) in a couple of weeks, we are going to IKEA and may only buy TWO or THREE things.  For FUN!  Certainly, a new day has dawned for us.  In the midst of this new busy, I feel such a sense of peace, and of rest, as silly as that sounds.  I get to bake now.

It’s really Real.

Oh My Goodness.

What a humongous huge ginormous amazing difference the signage makes!

I love it love it love it.  And we open in less than 12 hours!

And we’re back.

Building Exterior on Oct. 1, 2008

Building Exterior (& new camera) on Oct. 16, 2010

Painting is 99% completed!  We noticed a few details that need to be painted dark gray, but for the most part, it is done!

Next week the perpendicular hanging sign and the name for the front of the building will be installed!  There has been another delay with the doors (grumble grumble grumble) and they should be here in the next week (or two).  Whether we have new doors or old, we’re still going to be open on Saturday, October 23rd!

Before we go…

We’re headed out tomorrow for our annual trip to Las Vegas for the TopCoder Open.  I would say that I am excited for heat and sun, but considering it has been 80 degrees and sunny for the last two days here, I don’t think it will be much of a change!

Instead, we are excited for the changes that will take place in the appearance of our building while we are away.  The painter is scheduled to start on Monday, and the new doors will go in on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Can’t wait to post the picture of the building for you to see next Saturday!

Weather delays…

The crazy amounts of rain we received last week did little to help get the exterior work finished.  Instead, Mat is working into this week, and hopes it will all be ready for painting on Monday!  He installed the new dental moulding today, and that made a huge difference!  It is really coming together, one step at a time.

Ugly Duckling

We’re facing down the final weeks of renovations right now, and a flurry of work is taking place.

Away with you, Nasty Aluminum!

New facade and window framing.

In addition to the exterior, Justin and I are putting the finishing touches on the interior, from new shelves for the closet, to assembling the front counter and double oven cabinet (which will be arriving any day now).  I am working at organizing ingredients and pans and utensils to make it a kitchen that is easy to work in.  More pictures coming shortly as we get things in order!

Window Update

Here has been our building for the last week:

Gorgeous, no?

We have been busy waiting for the new windows to come in.  In the meantime, Mat finished the framing for the two new panels (going from 3 smaller to two larger panels).  It is still going to look a bit unfinished, as the whole new facade will be done at the same time, at the end of July.

We can already tell a major difference in the amount of heat the new windows let through, versus the old ones.  The old widows were pretty much solid screens, letting in tons of heat or cold from the outside.  It will be interesting to see the utility bills in the coming months!

Helpful tips

Here are some helpful tips if you want to get drunk and randomly punch windows on a Friday night at 2AM.

1) Pick a window that isn’t surrounded by tons of people that will see you break it.

2) Pick a window that, when shattered, won’t try to kill you.  The glass should be less than 50 years old and of the “safety” variety so it doesn’t just break into large, razor-sharp pieces.

3) When the cops find you, don’t say you got that nice, fresh, gaping flesh wound “earlier”

4) Pick a window that is worth *less* than $2000 so, when you get arrested, it isn’t a felony

Wake up at 2AM and immediately start filling out paper work for the police

Tonight the front window got smashed by someone who isn’t so bright.  The general consensus is that they are lucky they didn’t lose a limb.  The top half of that window could have easily fallen and chopped off an arm or leg, so to just have a minor flesh wound is a good thing.   I’m glad I’m not cleaning up body parts along with the glass.  This is extremely unsafe 50 year old glass, not the typical safety glass you would normally find, which is part of the reason it was slated to be replaced in a couple of months.  I woke up to the sound of the window breaking (fun!) and pretty much knew exactly what had happened.  I threw on a T-shirt and some styling shoes and came down to assess the damage.  The cops were already here, since it’s Friday night on The Square and they pretty much just camp out, dealing with the typical fights and drunkeness.  I filled out an “incident report”, gave them the quotes we already had to replace that window, and they tried to find glass with blood on it.  They caught the guy pretty quick and he confessed, after trying to say that the fresh wound he was tending to was a “pre-existing condition”.  Because of the cost of replacing the entire window (around $2200), he will be charged with a felony after they patch him up.  Now back to bed!

A nice feature.

This morning plumbers from Chet’s Plumbing & Heating came in to install the kitchen sink, the handwashing sink, the mop sink, and the toilet and bathroom sink.

What is it about running water that is so momentous?  Really, it is just a couple of sinks and a toilet.  But all of a sudden the space is USABLE.  While all of my ingredients, pans, and tools are upstairs in the apartment kitchen, I could walk into the bakery space, turn on the oven, bake a cake, and then wash the dishes.

Now we are starting to figure out more of the details that tend to get lost in the big picture planning: toilet paper holder, soap dispenser, paper towel roll, mirror, art, storage, etc. etc.!
