There and Back.

On last Thursday morning we packed up the car with a couple of bags and the above cookies and headed down towards Florida for Maria and Heath’s wedding.

After about 19 hours on the road and an overnight stay south of Nashville we arrived in Panama City Beach.  In less than an hour we were changed into our swimsuits and enjoying some beach time and swimming in the Gulf.

We connected with Maria and Heath, Shannon and Derek, and Mom and Paul and spent the evening having dinner at The Shrimp Boat restaurant with a number of family members and friends that were in town for the wedding as well.  The next morning we hit the (rainy!) ground running and the ladies spent the day at the salon getting hair and makeup down for the ceremony, complete with mimosas.

There was a bit of stress getting everyone through the salon in time, and a triathlon causing roads to be closed didn’t help in that regard!  Thankfully, by the afternoon the skies had cleared and soon Maria was walking down the sandy aisle on the arms of her mom and dad.  The ceremony was elegant and sweet, and a more comfortable, beautiful setting could not be imagined.

Paul had asked me to take charge of his fancy camera during the ceremony (which I loved, by the way!) so I’m waiting until they return from their Florida travels to get more ceremony shots.  Justin grabbed a few on his iPhone, and I kinda like this shot of me taking a picture of Shannon.

After the ceremony, a reception and dinner were held at the Boatyard restaurant.  The room and setting were comfortable and a good size for the group, and the appetizers and dinner food were exceptional.  Roasted oysters, seared rare tuna, lime shrimp, veggies and salads, prime rib, pastas, shrimp and grits, roasted mahi mahi and other options were all part of the incredible spread.  Plus, the sugar cookie favors seemed to be well received as well.  While Maria and Heath made the rounds and tried to visit with all their guests, we enjoyed visiting with Shannon and Derek (who traveled to Florida from San Francisco).

Early the next morning we were packed up and headed back north again, though we choose a slightly different route to utilize the Interstates a bit more and fit in a short visit with some of Justin’s family.  Our plan came undone rather quickly though, as just north of Nashville and south of Louisville, there were two MAJOR accidents, and the Interstate was completely blocked.  We spent over two hours winding our way through the (very pretty) backroads of Kentucky, trying to avoid the backed up traffic in all directions.  We later found out that people died in both accidents, and our inconvenient delay pales in comparison to what others were going through.

After the long day in the car the day before, we enjoyed sitting down for breakfast with Justin’s Uncle Mike, Aunt Shelley, and cousins Abby and Adam and their little ones, Mason and Ruby.  This was our first time meeting Ruby, and I loved her smiles and chatter.  We don’t get to see these great relatives as often as we like, so it was fun to connect with them for a bit on our way home.

Overall, spending 40+ hours in the car is not the best way to spend a weekend, but the reward of seeing and spending a bit of time with family and getting a bit of Florida sun was well worth it.

Gorgeous.

This past weekend my stepsister Maria had a beautiful wedding ceremony in Panama City Beach, Florida.  Kind of a nice spot.

I had some issues getting pictures from my phone, but now that I’ve got ‘em, I’ll write up a full blog post tomorrow!

Getting our Fill of Minneapolis

We had been looking forward to this week for quite awhile.  Back in January we were able to get tickets for Snow Patrol‘s North America tour, and I had just recently found out that Ed Sheeran was touring with and opening for them.  Being able to catch great British bands is pretty rare here in the Midwest, so we were looking forward to the opportunity to see these musicians live.

And the concert certainly did not disappoint.  Ed Sheeran is still a relative new comer to America’s music scene (his album doesn’t even release until next month), but he is a fantastic performer and a very talented musician.  A lot of the comments around us transformed from  ”Who is this guy? I’ve never heard of him,” to “This is great!  I love this guy!”

And Snow Patrol was a treat to see live.  Apparently the lead singer, Gary Lightbody, is having issues with his voice and throat and he wasn’t able to sing a number of the songs planned for their set, but they really made up for it by playing more of the songs from their older albums, which I thoroughly enjoyed.  Hopefully his voice will recover as the tour progresses, it would be sad if they had to cancel any of the future shows.

Plus, an evening in Minneapolis is always going to mean a good meal out, and as my cousin Mike recently joined the team of chefs at HauteDish we were looking forward to reconnecting with him over a good meal.  I had some fun making these silly HauteDish pig cookies for him to share with the staff.  Mike actually had the evening off work, so he and his girlfriend Jen were able to sit down and join us for the meal, rather than preparing it.  We had such a good time talking “shop” with them, about restaurants, food preparations, cookbooks, great meals, etc.  And we really had our socks blown off by the incredible food that found its way to our table.  We had enjoyed a meal here last year with Trav and Emily, but the exceptionally skilled staff is really starting to show off (in a good way!).

Mike ordered off the menu for us, plus the kitchen sent out a few extra dishes for us to try and enjoy.  The starter salad was a take on a classic wedge salad, but was super fresh and crisp, with the best bleu cheese and french dressings ever.  He also requested the Char-Cuts plate, but the chef definitely went overboard and sent out the most impressive 2 foot long board of charcuterie we have ever seen.  There were even a few items on the board that Mike hadn’t seen yet.  We all devoured it, exclaiming over different bites as we went.  HauteDish definitely deserves its title as the best place in Minneapolis for charcuterie.

The kitchen then sent out a few warm appetizers, Green Noodles (pictured above) and Peas and Toast.  The homemade noodles married beautifully with the ricotta salata spheres, which burst open with the pressure of your fork, oozing the milkiness through the noodles, similar to a poached egg.  And never have mashed peas on a piece of toast tasted like what they prepare at HauteDish.  Granted, I can swear to you that I have never thought mashed peas on anything would be considered “good,” but these fresh, super sweet green peas were excellent with asparagus, pecorino cheese and foam, and house-smoked sturgeon on a slice of toasted brioche bread.

Mike had also ordered us two entrees to share, knowing the size of these dished would be impossible to tackle on one’s own.  And wow-za!  These two plates nearly took up the width of the table!  Mike and Jen shared the Rabbit and Carrots (and made sure we tried a few bites as well!) and Justin and I shared the Colorado Lamb Three Ways.  Mike had been telling us this was the best lamb he had ever had, and after taking a bite, we were quick to agree.  The meat on the chops was like the finest filet mignon we’ve had, except the fact that it wasn’t beef!  The care and attention that is going into all of the components of these dishes is really remarkable.  We had to pass on dessert for two reasons, yes, we had a concert to go to, but also because our stomachs might have exploded.  HauteDish doesn’t promise you an easy, light meal.  But a dinner that is uber rich, spectacularly delicious, and pushing the boundaries of what “classic Midwestern fare” is?  Absolutely.

Segway Tour of San Antonio

Oh my goodness, what a memorable day!  As a fun gift for my birthday, Justin’s parents booked us a Segway Tour of San Antonio.  As it was also Travis and Emily’s spring break from teaching, we booked two more slots in the group for them as well, to share in the laughs and adventure.

We really didn’t know what to expect, other than looking a bit dorky wearing bike helmets while riding a Segway.  And that certainly did happen immediately, but after a short 5 minute orientation at SegCity of San Antonio, we were all riding Segways down the sidewalks of downtown San Antonio.

We were all impressed by how incredibly easy it was to control the Segway, and how little effort it took to speed up, slow down, and maneuver around.  It only took a few minutes before Trav and Justin were weaving in and out of the line and speeding past Em and I, all the while eating gummy coke bottles and twin cherries candies.

Our guide lead us over to Hemisfair Park to get away from the crowded sidewalks for a bit.  As there were still quite a few people around the Tower of the Americas, instead he choose to take us a bit further to the Alamodome, where we were really able to get a feel for the Segways, racing and playing around the sidewalks and open spaces.

It was such a fun experience, and we definitely had lots of laughs.  Thank you again, John and Sarah!

Roost in Houston

Last night Trav, Emily, Julie and I ate at Roost in Houston.  There had been an article in the local paper about it, and it looked interesting, so we drove into the Montrose neighborhood and checked it out.  The restaurant itself is very understated, but comfortable, and the menu is small, which made figuring out what to order nice and easy.

Restaurant interior

In the article had been a picture of some amazing looking pretzels, and that was one of the reasons we chose to go.  Turns out the “bread service” is giant pretzels with different butters.  We chose foie gras, bleu cheese, Spam, and honey butters.  All were excellent on the giant pretzels.

Trav and Emily, playing with their food

Our first shared course was pork belly, with beans, a corn bread “crumble”, and pickled watermelon.  All excellent.  The pork belly was cooked perfectly and the flavors went together well.

Pork belly and pickled watermelon

Next was the charcuterie – duck rillettes, calf heart and liver, home made sausage, pickled vegetables and hot mustard.  All excellent with big flavors.  Especially surprising was how good the pickled vegetables were.  They had a huge amount of interesting flavor.

Duck rillettes

The main courses were the catch of the day (red snapper), served over kimchi and an egg yolk sauce, and a cauliflower steak.  The fish was probably the savory dish of the night – just really well cooked fish and the kimchi and sauce went really well with it.  The cauliflower steak was also excellent.  I had never seen this preparation before – deep fried chunk of cauliflower, but it tasted great.

Desserts started with fresh donuts with coffee ice cream.  We’ve been to a few places now that serve fresh hot donuts with ice cream, and it’s one of my favorite things.  You really can’t get a bad combination here.

Donuts and coffee ice cream, with pistachios

We also had banana pudding that was easily the best I’d ever had.  Not too sweet, and super creamy and delicious, and a brioche with chocolate ice cream, also excellent.  They know their desserts here.

All in all it was a great restaurant visit and we were both quite happy with everything.

Reconnecting in The Woodlands

As we are heading toward San Antonio, we made a point to fit in a couple days to stop in The Woodlands to visit Justin’s brother Travis and his wife Emily, as well as the friends we have made in this area just north of Houston.

Brothers! Having lunch at Central Market in Houston.

We are enjoying this family time, hanging out, sharing some meals, exploring Houston, and petting kitties.

Justin met our friend Katie's cat Tozer, and got his kitty fix for the day, though I think his desire for another cat has now increased exponentially.

We are also getting in some good eats!

Pistachio Bubbies

Trav and Em introduced us to Bubbies ice cream, which is ice cream, formed and wrapped in mochi, a glutinous rice paste, with a consistency similar to rolled fondant or marzipan.  These were really delicious, though the texture took just a minute to get used to, kind of like biting through a Starburst candy.

Yummy, and sturdy, Sprinkles cupcakes. This was after I dropped the box upside down in the street - whoops!

And while we were out and about today we stopped at Sprinkles for cupcakes after lunch.  Quite tasty, and the Lemon Coconut was especially well received by the guys, though I will always be partial to chocolate and peanut butter!

A Day in Atlanta

Though it was a bit out of our way, Justin and I decided to come back through Atlanta and stay for a couple days.  It worked out especially well, as my sister Maria was able to come up from her home about an hour south and spend the day with us exploring and being tourists.

Look! There's a fish in the window!

We walked from our hotel over to the Georgia Aquarium, only about 5 blocks.  We were able to slowly wander through the exhibits, worked at steering clear of the herds of 5 year olds, reaching into tide pools to touch sharks, rays, and sea urchins, watched an extraordinarily awkward dolphin show (less singing, more dolphins please!), and in general enjoy exploring this aquarium.

What a funny perspective! Justin is in the lookout dome, though it looks like he is in a tank with the fish looking at him!

It was rather funny to be behind this group of little kids as the moving sidewalk went through the Whale Shark's tank. All the pointing fingers, gasps of awe, and little shouts of "look at that!". It is a pretty impressive portion of the aquarium.

There is a special frog exhibit going on right now, and it actually was one of my favorite parts! Though this particular frog twitched funny and Maria might have almost tipped over!

After the Aquarium, we walked around and through Centennial Olympic Park and stopped at a little hamburger stand, Googie Burger, for lunch.

Buddy, enjoying the freedom not being a plant offers.

We really weren’t expecting too much, but these burgers and fries were a hit!  Buddy, recently emerged from his brown shell as a real pig, enjoyed Googie Burger as well!

CNN Headquarters

From the park we walked over the CNN Headquarters and purchased tickets for the studio tour.  It was pretty interesting to listen to the director produce the live shows, watch some of the live feeds, and see the news room floors.  I’m not sure I’ve ever seen so many monitors in one place in my life!

Interior of CNN. The Studio tours starts by riding up the escalator to the 8th floor, inside the globe.

This escalator was Justin's dream come true. Maria's, not so much.

CNN's newsroom. Where all the news from around the country and world gets filtered down to what actually makes it on the air.

As close to Anderson Cooper as we could get... in the gift shop.

In all, we had a fun day taking in some of the Atlanta sites and visiting with Maria.  We’re glad we took the extra time for this stop!

A Day of Eating – Gasper-style

We started our day, setting off walking toward a place to grab smoothies for breakfast.  About a half mile from the hotel we found SmoothieWorld and each enjoyed a heathy strawberry pineapple/strawberry banana smoothie to kick the day off right, heading out again to extend our walk.

And then we found Glazed.  And Gaspers have a weakness for doughnuts.

But Oh. My. Word.  One bite of the Peanut Butter Pie doughnut and we were goners.  Pretty much the best doughnut we’ve ever had.  Justin also ordered a Maple and Neuske’s Bacon Doughnut, which was delicious, and a Sugar Twist Doughnut, which was spot on.  But that Peanut Butter Pie doughnut… Yes, we will be stopping there again.

As we had been walking around, we found a nice sushi place, and after the heavy meal from last night, we both agreed that sushi would be a much more appealing option for lunch.  At O Ku, we both chose a lunch special, which included one roll and several pieces of nigiri (simple slices of fresh fish on top of rice).  Justin chose the Rainbow Roll, which was snow crab, avocado, cucumber, and masago, rolled in rice and topped with fresh fish.  The nigiri was salmon, shrimp, and big eye tuna.  It was bright, light, and very fresh.

But my roll “won” as we like to say, a nod to whoever ordered the best thing.  I had the same nigiri, but ordered the Potato Wrapped Roll, which was shrimp tempura and avocado, rolled in sushi rice, then shoestring potatoes, and then fried, drizzled with eel sauce and a sweet and spicy mango sauce.  This roll was definitely a home run.  Fried potatoes are always a win.

Following our meal, we wanted to get a nice long walk in, and find dessert in the process.  We ended up walking towards the waterfront and found our way into Bakehouse.  A couple years ago we were in Charleston with our Aunt Maggie, and we stopped at this bakery, when it was called Baked and associated with the Baked in New York City.  Apparently that tie is no longer there, though you can still buy the Baked cookbooks here.  Well, whatever the name, they can still make some mean sweets!  We choose a peanut butter pie bar (I love the South’s obsession with chocolate and peanut butter!) and a Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Brownie.  Holy Sweetness, Batman!  We were not able to finish both of these bars, though not for lack of trying.  And then we continued our walk.

While out earlier, we walked by a place called Pace’s Pizza Balls.  Now, a Gasper does not walk past a place that claims to have Pizza Balls and not decide then and there that they need to consume said Pizza Ball.  So when we were ready for dinner we walked over and ordered a single Pizza Ball, as we were not going to commit to our entire dinner being Pizza Balls.  And delivered to our table was a fist-sized, slightly deflated, pizza ball, filled with sauce, cheese, and pepperoni.  Now, I actually enjoyed this funny foodstuff quite a bit.  The filling and crust reminded me immediately of Rock Rococo’s pizza in calzone form.  Justin didn’t really care for it and was thankful that we had decided to split one.  He then decided that we should stop for frozen yogurt, so we stopped into Yogurt Mountain because he wanted to say he “climbed Yogurt Mountain.”  Unfortunately, Justin made the awful mistake of choosing the Banana Pudding flavored frozen yogurt, which tasted EXACTLY like Banana Laffy Taffy.  I stuck to safe choices like chocolate and cheesecake, so again, Justin was disappointed, but I was happy as a clam.

To make up for his two food strikes, at the last minute Justin decided we could split something at Jim ‘n Nick’s BBQ, primarily because there is a neon pink pig on their sign.  We think this is always a positive way to judge a restaurant.

And Jim ‘n Nick’s did not disappoint.  We choose to split an order of their Kitchen Sink Nachos with pulled pork, and a couple of their cheddar cheese biscuits.  The biscuits arrived, and were nice and small, mini muffin size, but were warm and cheesy and great balance of sweet and savory.

And we thoroughly enjoyed the nachos.  We were pleasantly surprised at how bright the flavors were, and as hard as it is to believe, that it wasn’t a plate full of heaviness.  The abundance of fresh lettuce and pico de gallo, nice thin and crispy tortilla chips, and a light hand with the sour cream and shredded cheese, really put these nachos closer to the realm of a fresh taco salad.  And the pulled pork had a great smoky flavor while retaining a good amount of its moisture.  Very tasty indeed, and a a great way to end our very random day of eating.  One we know John and Maggie would both have enjoyed along with us (well, minus the sushi)!

Very Happy Holidays

As is our tradition, we spent a few days around Christmas up in Wausau soaking in time with family.  With clear weather and warmer temperatures (by this I mean in the 20′s and 30′s, and not 0!), travel was uneventful and we were able to go back and forth between our families nice and easily.  Here are some happy moments from the past weeks.

Christmas with the Schneider family; Laura opening her "Red" exchange gift.

Aunt Jean and Mom, in a great place!

Sharing a very silly Christmas Day lunch of a Figi's gift box with Mom, Paul and Tony.

Celebrating (the day after) Christmas morning with the Gaspers

John gave each of his sons a weapon this year, received with cheers and a bit of shock.

Not joking around here...

Celebrating Christmas with the Miller family - kids galore!

Spending some extended time with Trav and Em over a serious game of Trains.

Enjoying a Girls Day of pedicures with Emily, Maureen, Jenn, and Madie!

New Year's Eve with Maggie and Beth.. and a giant stack of fireworks!

Using several gifts to create Root Beer Caviar! Not quite ready for Alinea... but still fun and tasty!

Hoping you had a very happy holiday season, and wishing you a very happy year ahead!
