Getting our Fill of Minneapolis

We had been looking forward to this week for quite awhile.  Back in January we were able to get tickets for Snow Patrol‘s North America tour, and I had just recently found out that Ed Sheeran was touring with and opening for them.  Being able to catch great British bands is pretty rare here in the Midwest, so we were looking forward to the opportunity to see these musicians live.

And the concert certainly did not disappoint.  Ed Sheeran is still a relative new comer to America’s music scene (his album doesn’t even release until next month), but he is a fantastic performer and a very talented musician.  A lot of the comments around us transformed from  ”Who is this guy? I’ve never heard of him,” to “This is great!  I love this guy!”

And Snow Patrol was a treat to see live.  Apparently the lead singer, Gary Lightbody, is having issues with his voice and throat and he wasn’t able to sing a number of the songs planned for their set, but they really made up for it by playing more of the songs from their older albums, which I thoroughly enjoyed.  Hopefully his voice will recover as the tour progresses, it would be sad if they had to cancel any of the future shows.

Plus, an evening in Minneapolis is always going to mean a good meal out, and as my cousin Mike recently joined the team of chefs at HauteDish we were looking forward to reconnecting with him over a good meal.  I had some fun making these silly HauteDish pig cookies for him to share with the staff.  Mike actually had the evening off work, so he and his girlfriend Jen were able to sit down and join us for the meal, rather than preparing it.  We had such a good time talking “shop” with them, about restaurants, food preparations, cookbooks, great meals, etc.  And we really had our socks blown off by the incredible food that found its way to our table.  We had enjoyed a meal here last year with Trav and Emily, but the exceptionally skilled staff is really starting to show off (in a good way!).

Mike ordered off the menu for us, plus the kitchen sent out a few extra dishes for us to try and enjoy.  The starter salad was a take on a classic wedge salad, but was super fresh and crisp, with the best bleu cheese and french dressings ever.  He also requested the Char-Cuts plate, but the chef definitely went overboard and sent out the most impressive 2 foot long board of charcuterie we have ever seen.  There were even a few items on the board that Mike hadn’t seen yet.  We all devoured it, exclaiming over different bites as we went.  HauteDish definitely deserves its title as the best place in Minneapolis for charcuterie.

The kitchen then sent out a few warm appetizers, Green Noodles (pictured above) and Peas and Toast.  The homemade noodles married beautifully with the ricotta salata spheres, which burst open with the pressure of your fork, oozing the milkiness through the noodles, similar to a poached egg.  And never have mashed peas on a piece of toast tasted like what they prepare at HauteDish.  Granted, I can swear to you that I have never thought mashed peas on anything would be considered “good,” but these fresh, super sweet green peas were excellent with asparagus, pecorino cheese and foam, and house-smoked sturgeon on a slice of toasted brioche bread.

Mike had also ordered us two entrees to share, knowing the size of these dished would be impossible to tackle on one’s own.  And wow-za!  These two plates nearly took up the width of the table!  Mike and Jen shared the Rabbit and Carrots (and made sure we tried a few bites as well!) and Justin and I shared the Colorado Lamb Three Ways.  Mike had been telling us this was the best lamb he had ever had, and after taking a bite, we were quick to agree.  The meat on the chops was like the finest filet mignon we’ve had, except the fact that it wasn’t beef!  The care and attention that is going into all of the components of these dishes is really remarkable.  We had to pass on dessert for two reasons, yes, we had a concert to go to, but also because our stomachs might have exploded.  HauteDish doesn’t promise you an easy, light meal.  But a dinner that is uber rich, spectacularly delicious, and pushing the boundaries of what “classic Midwestern fare” is?  Absolutely.

Hot Dogs on a Hot Day

We decided this morning to check out the Japanese Tea Gardens in the afternoon, but after driving around the packed parking lot and trying to navigate the traffic around the zoo, we opted for Plan B, driving up to Austin for a late lunch at Frank.

We had walked by Frank when we were in Austin for SXSW, and after reading a few articles about the place, I wanted to head back and try it.  What had particularly caught my eye in one of the articles was that they have a version of Canadian Waffle Fries Poutine, which might seem like all sorts of gross to some, but I thought it sounded all sorts of fantastic.

Justin ordered the Jackalope (a house made antelope, rabbit, and pork sausage covered with huckleberry compote, sriacha mayo, and cheddar cheese) while I choose the Carolina Pork It (a Vienna beef dog, stuffed with American Cheese and wrapped in bacon, then covered with green chili pimento cheese and coleslaw).  We added a small order of the Poutine fries and a Corn Cup (roasted corn with butter, chili mayonaise, lime juice, and cotija cheese) to round out the meal.  And it all rocked our faces off.  But the key is that once you pick up the hot dog, DO NOT put it back down.  These puppies are fully loaded with toppings and tend to be 6-Napkin messy.  And the poutine was everything I hoped for: crisp fries covered in melted gooey cheese and flavorful brown gravy.  Again, crazy messy, but very worth it!

For reals?!

Justin and I took advantage of another beeeaaa-uuuu-ti-ful day by walking over to Market Square.  We had been eyeing up a potential gift to bring home and also wanted to have lunch at Mi Tierra.

Walking through the doors you first walk by the amazing craziness that is the bakery case.  It took us about .4 seconds to agree that we would be stopping back here after our meal.

And then we were lead into one of the dining areas, and I’m a bit amazed that our corneas didn’t explode.

The food, you ask?  Yea, it was phenomenal.  Rated right up there with Taco Taco in our opinion.  The tortillas were crazy fresh and well worth eating one all on its own.  But, although there is definitely a flavor difference, there isn’t much visual difference between one plate of enchiladas, rice, and beans from any other place, and truthfully, not all that pretty.  It is much more fun taking pictures of the roaming mariachis!

With a little room left in our tummies, we headed back over to the bakery case and made a few selections.

It was pretty much like Justin’s dream bakery – so many things completely covered in coconut!  I enjoyed a simple roll of sweet cinnamon dough, that reminded me a bit of a shortbread cookie.  I’m sure the few treats we brought home won’t last very long!

Mini French Toast!

I freely admit it, I have an irrational love of miniature every day items.  Justin knows not to attempt to keep me away from the travel toiletries aisle at Target before we leave for a trip.  New tiny mouthwash!  New tiny bodywash!  New travel toothbrush and toothpaste!  Bliss.

And when we were walking through Central Market last week and my eyes fell upon this tiny loaf of brioche bread, well, there was just no way on earth that I could let that lie.  I IMMEDIATELY knew I wanted to make mini french toast with that loaf, and it was going to be AMAZING french toast for the sole reason that it was going to be TINY.

And how easy a batch of french toast it was, when all the slices fit in one pan!  And an excellent way to control portion size.  Each tiny bite was delicious, made all the more delicious with real maple syrup (a birthday gift from Travis and Emily).

Tacos and Donuts? Yes.

With the weather cold and rainy, we have been more willing to venture out in the car for lunch, rather than taking advantage of places within walking distance.  Today we headed out for Original Donut Shop, which apparently also sells a variety of tacos and Mexican specialties.  Hoping that the long line of cars heading into the drive-thru was a good sign, we found a place to park and went in.

people people people people!

And were pretty much met with apparent chaos.  People were standing around in every little space, every tiny table was crammed with people, and and we stood for a second in stunned silence trying to figure what we were getting ourselves into.  We gravitated toward the line with the donuts – fewer people.  I chose a glazed yeast donut covered in chocolate and vanilla frosting, while Justin went with his go-to favorites: a sugar twist, an apple fritter, and a coconut covered cake donut.  With that bagged up, we edged our way over the the “Order Tacos Here” sign.  We decided on two Beef Fajita Tacos and two Carne Guisada tacos (and by “decided” I mean, completely guessed at what to order!).  After a substantial wait, our order came up and we headed back to the apartment to eat in a bit of peace.

Tacos might not always look the prettiest; too bad you can't just reach in and grab a bite!

Turns out, all those gazillions of people were there for a good reason, and we were glad we stuck to our guns and were willing to wait.  The tortillas were handmade and extremely fresh, a bit thicker and chewier than we’re used to, which I love love love.  The beef and onions in the fajita taco were incredibly tender and flavorful, and the same can be said about the meat in the Carne Guisada taco (which is a thick stew filling).  The donuts were terrific as well.  Very fresh, with a crackly sweet glaze and a light, airy interior.  And while we questioned tacos and donuts at first, now we can’t imagine anything that makes more sense!

Cascabel Mexican Patio

The other day, Julie and I took a short walk over to Cascabel Mexican Patio, here in San Antonio.  I have been looking at reviews on Yelp, UrbanSpoon, TripAdvisor and other sites to try and get a feel for the restaurants that are around us, and this one was highly rated everywhere.

We really didn’t know what to expect, other than that it is a restaurant considered more “authentic” than other Mexican restaurants.  Based on the first view of the menu, that appeared to be the case.  My Spanish is abysmal, but I know enough food words to have a general idea what I was ordering, but I stil knew that whatever I got was going to have a few surprises, and I wasn’t disappointed.  I ordered huaraches, with carne al pastor, and Julie ordered tlacoyos.  It was 3 fried little nuggets, similar to empanadas, with a cactus salad and rice.   They also brought us out little bowls of soup and chips and salsa as an appetizer, both of which were awesome.

Both our dishes were absolutely excellent.  Great, subtle flavors and everything worked well together.

For dessert I had a Guava empanada, which reminded me of pudgy pies made over a fire, and Julie had flan.  The flan was thick and almost had a cheesecake texture – really, really good.

If this is what Mexican food is supposed to taste like, I think we’re missing out in the US with bland tacos and Taco Bell.

Feelin’ the Texas Love

Justin and Buddy at County Line BBQ along San Antonio’s RiverWalk.  Their smoked sausage is phenomenal, and I loved the brisket while Justin was partial to their ribs.

And as we were walking back, for the first time in my life, I got pooped on by a bird.  Justin and I agreed it was the bird world’s retribution for when Justin (unexpectedly) grabbed that pigeon the other day.  I REALLY need to start carrying Purell in my pocket!

Tortillas, Tamales, and Bunuelos, Oh My!

On my way into the fitness center this morning, I noticed a message/cork board outside of it with all sorts of restaurant menus, offers for dog-sitting services, and notices for yoga classes.  But one hand-written paper really grabbed my attention, recommending Sanitary Tortilla, just a few blocks away, for fantastic tamales, tortillas, chips, and other handmade, Mexican fixings for meals.  As the weather is gorgeous again today, we decided to walk over around lunch time, pick up a few things, and bring them back to the apartment to eat.

Pork Tamale and a fresh tortilla piled with Barbacoa and green tomatilla salsa.

And WOW, were we blown away by the little storefront, and later, the food.  They had freshly made Barbacoa (beef), Carnitas (pork), Tamales (with pork filling), tortillas, chips, salsa, Chicarrones (fried pork cracklings), and sweets.  We seriously had a hard time limiting our choices, though pretty much agreed we would be returning next weekend, and so we didn’t have to buy EVERYTHING at once.  We settled on a lunch special of barbacoa, tortillas, salsa, and a soda, but then also added a small package of bunuelos (fried tortillas, covered in sugar and cinnamon, like Cinnamon Toast Crunch on steroids) and some tamales.  All for under $20.  And everything was spectacular.  And we definitely have enough leftovers to last us a few days.

A newly landscaped portion of the RiverWalk.

After lunch, we definitely needed to stretch out our tummies and went for a nice walk along the Southern end of the RiverWalk.  Lots of other walkers, joggers, and bikers had the same idea for the afternoon, enjoying the sun and sound of the water.

First Saturday in San Antonio

The temperature and humidity here have dipped a bit and it is much more comfortable walking around all of a sudden.  Seeing as how we weren’t instantly turned into sweat bombs, we were able to enjoy the walk today over to El Mercado, a Mexican market just west of downtown.  There were stalls upon stalls of Mexican crafts, t-shirts, souvenirs, and cowboy and sombreros in every color and size you can imagine.  We even found one that was just right for Buddy!

There were also a number of a food carts and stalls, and decided to take in an early lunch in order to sample the homemade and authentic food.  We tried a Beef Fajita, which was wrapped in an absolutely divine homemade tortilla, and a Pork Gordita, which had a very flavorful pork filling and a delightfully soft and chewy, lightly fried gordita shell.  We asked for each to have “everything” which meant fresh lettuce, tomatoes, grated cheese, and a smear of fresh guacamole.  Delicious.

We also thoroughly enjoyed a cup of roasted corn, with the addition of butter, salt, and parmesan cheese.  All the wonderful tastes of the best corn on the cob, but the convenience of being able to eat it with a spoon.  No picture though – envision corn kernels in a styrofoam cup. :)  We enjoyed walking through Market Square, and then headed down to further explore the RiverWalk.  The weather was just perfect to spend a few hours walking and exploring more of the area.
