A Day of Eating – Gasper-style

We started our day, setting off walking toward a place to grab smoothies for breakfast.  About a half mile from the hotel we found SmoothieWorld and each enjoyed a heathy strawberry pineapple/strawberry banana smoothie to kick the day off right, heading out again to extend our walk.

And then we found Glazed.  And Gaspers have a weakness for doughnuts.

But Oh. My. Word.  One bite of the Peanut Butter Pie doughnut and we were goners.  Pretty much the best doughnut we’ve ever had.  Justin also ordered a Maple and Neuske’s Bacon Doughnut, which was delicious, and a Sugar Twist Doughnut, which was spot on.  But that Peanut Butter Pie doughnut… Yes, we will be stopping there again.

As we had been walking around, we found a nice sushi place, and after the heavy meal from last night, we both agreed that sushi would be a much more appealing option for lunch.  At O Ku, we both chose a lunch special, which included one roll and several pieces of nigiri (simple slices of fresh fish on top of rice).  Justin chose the Rainbow Roll, which was snow crab, avocado, cucumber, and masago, rolled in rice and topped with fresh fish.  The nigiri was salmon, shrimp, and big eye tuna.  It was bright, light, and very fresh.

But my roll “won” as we like to say, a nod to whoever ordered the best thing.  I had the same nigiri, but ordered the Potato Wrapped Roll, which was shrimp tempura and avocado, rolled in sushi rice, then shoestring potatoes, and then fried, drizzled with eel sauce and a sweet and spicy mango sauce.  This roll was definitely a home run.  Fried potatoes are always a win.

Following our meal, we wanted to get a nice long walk in, and find dessert in the process.  We ended up walking towards the waterfront and found our way into Bakehouse.  A couple years ago we were in Charleston with our Aunt Maggie, and we stopped at this bakery, when it was called Baked and associated with the Baked in New York City.  Apparently that tie is no longer there, though you can still buy the Baked cookbooks here.  Well, whatever the name, they can still make some mean sweets!  We choose a peanut butter pie bar (I love the South’s obsession with chocolate and peanut butter!) and a Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Brownie.  Holy Sweetness, Batman!  We were not able to finish both of these bars, though not for lack of trying.  And then we continued our walk.

While out earlier, we walked by a place called Pace’s Pizza Balls.  Now, a Gasper does not walk past a place that claims to have Pizza Balls and not decide then and there that they need to consume said Pizza Ball.  So when we were ready for dinner we walked over and ordered a single Pizza Ball, as we were not going to commit to our entire dinner being Pizza Balls.  And delivered to our table was a fist-sized, slightly deflated, pizza ball, filled with sauce, cheese, and pepperoni.  Now, I actually enjoyed this funny foodstuff quite a bit.  The filling and crust reminded me immediately of Rock Rococo’s pizza in calzone form.  Justin didn’t really care for it and was thankful that we had decided to split one.  He then decided that we should stop for frozen yogurt, so we stopped into Yogurt Mountain because he wanted to say he “climbed Yogurt Mountain.”  Unfortunately, Justin made the awful mistake of choosing the Banana Pudding flavored frozen yogurt, which tasted EXACTLY like Banana Laffy Taffy.  I stuck to safe choices like chocolate and cheesecake, so again, Justin was disappointed, but I was happy as a clam.

To make up for his two food strikes, at the last minute Justin decided we could split something at Jim ‘n Nick’s BBQ, primarily because there is a neon pink pig on their sign.  We think this is always a positive way to judge a restaurant.

And Jim ‘n Nick’s did not disappoint.  We choose to split an order of their Kitchen Sink Nachos with pulled pork, and a couple of their cheddar cheese biscuits.  The biscuits arrived, and were nice and small, mini muffin size, but were warm and cheesy and great balance of sweet and savory.

And we thoroughly enjoyed the nachos.  We were pleasantly surprised at how bright the flavors were, and as hard as it is to believe, that it wasn’t a plate full of heaviness.  The abundance of fresh lettuce and pico de gallo, nice thin and crispy tortilla chips, and a light hand with the sour cream and shredded cheese, really put these nachos closer to the realm of a fresh taco salad.  And the pulled pork had a great smoky flavor while retaining a good amount of its moisture.  Very tasty indeed, and a a great way to end our very random day of eating.  One we know John and Maggie would both have enjoyed along with us (well, minus the sushi)!

Navigating Downtown Charleston, and Husk

We drove into Charleston about 3 pm yesterday afternoon, and quickly remembered that driving in Charleston is not quite, well, easy.  Driving lanes mysteriously becoming places to park, turn into right turn only lanes at the drop of a hat, and you better make sure you are facing the correct direction with all the One Lane Only streets!

But it is a beautiful, historic city, and we’re glad we have a couple days here to walk and explore, and take in a few good meals.  Our hotel, the Renaissance Charleston Hotel, is smack dab in the center of the Downtown Charleston, and is a great spot to walk to pretty much anywhere in the area.  We don’t plan to take the car out of the garage till we’re reading to leave the city.

Our first night out, we walked down a few blocks along King Street to Husk restaurant.  We were excited to try this farm-to-table restaurant, especially after reading it was just rated the Best New Restaurant in America by Bon Appetit.  We loved the exterior of the beautifully up kept old Southern home, and the brightly lit windows and porch were exceedingly welcoming.

We were seated in a quiet corner of an upstairs room, and began our meal with some delicious, soft, homemade rolls served alongside a truly remarkable honey and pork fat butter.  Honey butter with bacon essence.  Win.  And when our appetizer of Southern Fried Chicken Skin arrived, we were figuring out pretty quickly this was going to be a major calorie investment, as, it seems, most authentically Southern meals are!

For our entrees, Justin ordered a VA Heritage Pork Chop with Roasted Red Pepper “Farrotto”, Benton’s Ham Creamed Kale, Coca Cola Braised Peanut Relish while I was swayed over to the TX Wagyu Sirloin, Ambrose Farms Spinach and Fingerling “Potato Salad”, Pickled Mushrooms, Bone Marrow Jus.  Bone Marrow Jus really sealed that decision.  And they were both excellant, though the portion sizes were quite substantial, larger than they needed to be by far, especially for such rich and heavy foods.  And especially when we like to order appetizers and a dessert.  And we were so very glad we ordered that dessert.  We were able to agree on a dessert to share, an Oatmeal Cookie Pie with Brown Sugar Ice cream.  And this one small dessert blew everything else we had for dinner out of the water.  It was a caramel-y, sweet (without being sugar-shock sweet), perfectly balanced dessert, and absolutely wonderful.  (Mom, both Justin and I thought this tasted like a Gooshy Bar combined with an oatmeal cookie!)  I know the Executive Chef has received his share of accolades, but someone needs to give some well-deserved props to whoever the pastry chef is!

I think, however, that we are coming to the conclusion that this heavy, super rich southern cooking might not be quite to our taste.  We certainly appreciate the efforts of the chefs to feature locally sourced products, or the best ingredients they can find in this region (especially in regards to fried chicken skin), but we’d love to see the ingredients themselves sing, rather than being over-dolled up with even more ingredients or sauces.  And shave the servings sizes by half, please.  There is no way we can walk enough to make a dent into some of these calorie excesses!

Additional Savannah Food Finds

We were really blown away by all the phenomenal restaurants in Savannah, most within walking distance of our apartment downtown.  We didn’t write up full reviews, as either our pictures were blurry, or we just didn’t think to pull a camera out to get a shot until we were pretty much done.

Teeny Tiny Table - at Vinnie VanGoGo's - and yes, we are eating outside in January!

But we would highly recommend and revisit any of these places in the future:

Vinnie VanGoGo’s Pizza - Excellent NY-style pizza.

Harris Baking Company – Their Ham and Provolone Croissants are soooooooo goooooooood (especially warmed up in the oven)!

Angel’s BBQ - Terrific pulled pork and a variety of housemade sauces, right in the middle of downtown.

Smooth Cafe - homemade pretzels were the bomb, but also terrific smoothies and exceptional chicken salad!

Goose Feathers Cafe - Justin had a fantastic breakfast sandwich here, literally 20 feet from our apartment door!

Papillote – Phenomenal little french cafe, everything available to go.  We got dinner from here one night and brought it back to the apartment to eat.  Another great spot, less than 75 feet away!

River Street Sweets – Cris and Lan opened our eyes to these Pralines.  Talk about a sugar high!

Wiley’s Championship BBQ

There were a couple of restaurants here in Savannah that we will miss quite a bit.  We don’t have equivalents to these at home, and we wish we could box them up and take them with us!  Justin mentioned Leoci’s Trattoria in an earlier post, and we’ve been back several times for their gnocchi – hand’s down, the best we’ve ever had!  But the other spot we will miss exponentially is Wiley’s Championship BBQ.

Inside - really can only fit about 25 people! Also, see that level of sweet tea in my cup? The servers never let it get below that level - they were continually topping it off! And as it was insanely delicious, we didn't mind a bit!

We had stopped here earlier in the week, and immediately knew we would be back again before we left.  Today we drove over for lunch, but also had some pulled pork packed up to go so we could make sandwiches during the SuperBowl tomorrow!

pile of burnt ends

Both times we visited, Justin ordered the Burnt Ends platter.  I’m not sure exactly what show we watched or where we might have read about Burnt Ends first, but we knew we wanted to try them.  And Goodness Gracious, me-oh-my, were they delicious.  Wiley’s also has a perfectly wonderful bbq sauce that, when doused over anything, makes that anything better.

pulled pork and beef brisket sliders - and two pickles (since I gladly took Justin's!)

The first time we went I tried a pulled pork slider and a beef brisket slider.  Both were superb, though the pulled pork was the favorite.

St. Louis-style ribs, with crisp sweet potato fries and crunchy coleslaw

Today I ordered the ribs, which I had read were fantastic.  And they were.  We both agreed they were probably the best ribs we had ever had.  100% perfect.  Plus an extra 10% when you added some of the sauce!

I think this looks quite clearly conveys that Justin was not planning on sharing... :)

And because we were already full, we totally had dessert too.  Banana Pudding and Peanut Butter Pie.  Yes.

Keeping an eye on the guard in the corner!

Time for a nap walk.

Great Lunch Spots in Savannah

What is so nice about staying in a new city for a few weeks is that you start to weed out the restaurants a bit, you talk to people, become (just a little) a local. We’re finding casual lunch spots that are absolutely superb, that we probably would have missed out on if we were only visiting for a few days.

One of these such spots, Mellow Mushroom, was recommended to us by our friend Cris, and is a regional chain in the Southeast.  There is definitely a relaxed, laid back, and funky vibe to this quirky pizza place, and the food was fantastic.

To start we ordered a half order of fresh pretzels, with garlic oil and parmesan.  It turned out they simply made pretzel shapes with their pizza dough, baked them, then brushed on garlic oil and gave ‘em a good shake of parmesan cheese.  Simple, but super delicious.  Like garlic knots or breadsticks, but way cooler when in the shape of a pretzel.  We’ll definitely be making these when we get home!

We shared a small Kosmic Karma pizza, which was topped with marinara, mozzarella, sun dried tomatoes, spinach, roma tomatoes, feta, with a swirl of pesto.  This pizza was terrific.  The toppings worked wonderfully together, and we both loved the chew and flavor of the crust.

Plus, you can’t really go too wrong with a place with lime green tiles and murals of cartoon greats in the bathrooms!

One of our other favorite lunches was from Zunzi’s Express, on York Street.  It is a carry-out only spot (typically with a line out the door), but they have some cafe tables beside their building, so we grabbed a few chairs and ate right there.

We split The Godfather sandwich (that picture is just of half of it!), which was ridiculously good and definitely substantial enough to share (though I think we each could have polished one off it was so delicious!).  A delicious soft french loaf is stuffed with lettuce, tomato, grilled chicken, smoked sausage, and topped with the most delicious sauces.  We pretty much just said “Yes” when they asked us if we wanted their sauces on it.  No idea exactly what they were!  We’ll definitely be going back and splitting one more of these in the coming week.

Happy as Can Bee…

There is, quite literally, the sweetest little shop on Broughton Street in downtown Savannah.  The Savannah Bee Company‘s shop is quite inviting, with their old fashioned screen porch door and promises of samples inside.  Along their counter they have a variety of jars, cheese and apples and honeycomb, as well as honey roasted pecans, and (if you’re lucky) a honey cheesecake out to nibble on.  It is very difficult not to walk out of the store without a jar or two.

I just spotted this recipe for Honey Pound Cake, and I thought it would be a great way to showcase one of SBC’s honeys (you know, without just eating it by the spoonful!).  I stopped into the shop and picked up a small jar of Sourwood honey, a sweet, super flavorful, dark hued honey.  I followed the recipe exactly, though I baked it in three mini loaf pans, which the batter fit perfectly in.  And we found a perk to going back to using a hand mixer – getting to lick the beaters!  And oh baby, is this batter fantastic!

Out of the oven, still warm, sliced and drizzled with a bit more honey (this other jar is our favorite – Winter White), this pound cake is groan-inducing.  And the aroma is off the charts.  The flavor of the honey really does shine, despite all the other ingredients.  I’m sure it will be quite delicious using local Raikowski Farm honey when we’re home too, but a few jars of this Sourwood honey will definitely find its way into our bags to take back!

Crazy Crab Shack.

Lunch today was an experience.  Flat out, one of the craziest places we have ever eaten at. We had read reviews about The Crab Shack out towards Tybee Island and were a bit prepared for some of the crazy, and the crazy did not disappoint.  Because honestly, where else in the world are we ever going to eat shrimp, illegally feed cats, and see alligators and parrots, all within 20 feet of each other?!

First off, the food was pretty decent.  We each did the Low Country Shrimp Boil, which included seasoned shrimp, sausage, potatoes, and corn on the cob.  Add a Sweet Tea, and we’re just about as Southern Coastal as we can get.  The table had a hole cut out of the center, with a garbage underneath, so we just chucked the shells and cobs and trash in there as we ate.  Easy Peasy!

But now for the crazy.  There were random cats that wandered about, and despite posted warnings not to feed them, Justin could not be contained and kept throwing pieces of shrimp down to this one.  Mom and Ruth, you would have HATED this place!! But John, you would have LOVED it!  :)

And then there were alligators!  They were much smaller than we had expected, but then, there sure were a lot of them!  Apparently you can pay to feed the buggers, but that wasn’t too high on my list to try.  I didn’t really want to see all those things swarming for food.  So all in all, this was a really fun lunch.  And the crazy is what added to every minute of it!

Food recommendations volume 2

This is a report of some quality foodstuffs we’ve consumed over the last week.  It’s always fun to be in a new place and try regional specialities, or new restaurants.

Today we ate lunch at Leoci’s, which we had seen walking around a week or so ago.  It was crazy good, and a good deal as well.  Julie had a seafood risotto, and I had the daily gnocchi special, which had a bacon and cream sauce and crispy pork on top of it.  It tasted as good as it looks.  Plus, since it was warm today, we ate out on their back patio, which was a nice treat in January.  This was probably our favorite place so far, and we’re looking forward to going again soon.

Nothing left of the gnocchi

On Saturday night, we went out for dessert at Lulu’s Chocolate Bar, which was a really fun little place.  They only serve desserts and drinks, so we tried a little of both.  I started with a Milky Way martini, which was two different chocolate liqueurs and caramel liqueur all mixed together.  It was wonderful.  We then shared a sunday for two.  It was three different kinds of ice cream and it came with 3 separate sauces (chocolate, caramel, strawberry), and 3 separate liqueurs, all in an edible chocolate bowl.  Everything was top notch, and the restaurant was very cool inside.

On Friday night, we went with the Garrard’s to the Salt Life Food Shack in Florida.  This was a bustling restaurant and they had a lot of fun seafood, while still keeping around some family friendly options (although Presley and Cooper split sushi, of all things).  Julie had a shrimp roll, which was just a sandwich piled with shrimp and covered in cheese.  She didn’t care for the cheese, but it pulled off easily.  I had a Poke Bowl, which was rice with a spicy sauce, avocado, steamed spinach, and then covered in a huge mound of tuna.  It was amazing.  I would definitely order it again – unique and tasty.

Presley, Cooper, and Cris, and Cooper's amazing 4 color mohawk.

Alligator Soul

Alligator Soul restaurant is pretty much as close to our condo as you can get, just a half block’s walk.  Based on the overwhelmingly positive reviews we had read, we thought it was well worth making reservations and walking over for dinner.  We were welcomed immediately upon entering and made to feel right at home as we were seated at our table.  Seemingly well known for their cocktails, I challenged the staff pretty much right away by requesting a non-alcoholic cocktail.  They were quite happy to oblige and send out a fantastic fruity blend of frothy pineapple juice and hibiscus syrup.

After hearing the specials for the evening, we chose to start our meal with a Charcuterie platter of housemade roasted and smoked meats and fish, a cheese plate of locally made cheeses and honey, and Alligator Bites – deep fried bits of alligator tail.  We thoroughly enjoyed and lingered over these appetizers for awhile.

Though as soon as our entrees arrived, we knew we had over-ordered.  I couldn’t resist trying the Shrimp and Grits.  And it was crazy delicious, without a doubt.  But I had wished I had ordered the appetizer portion, especially when Justin mentioned dessert!  I must say though, the grits reheated beautifully the next day for dinner!

Justin ordered the Amaretto and Espresso glazed Scallops and Grits and out came the largest scallops either of us had ever seen.  And like the Shrimp and Grits, they were exceptional.  Perfectly cooked and so delicious.  But also a very large portion.

For dessert our server highly recommended the Fig and Port glazed Cheesecake, and we also decided to try the Banana Beignets.  And both were phenomenal.  We would highly recommend saving some room in your tummy to fit dessert into your evening!  The staff at Alligator Soul guaranteed we had a terrific meal and time in their restaurant home.  We just needed to extend our evening walk by a few blocks to make up for such a filling and decadent Southern meal!

Good Eats of Savannah – Part 1

As you most likely have guessed, one of the things we are loving while in Savannah is trying new restaurants.  We’re scouring Yelp, Urbanspoon, and other reviews sites for good places to try, and just happening upon other places that we add to our list.  We’re trying to veer away from anything too touristy (read: Paula Dean’s), though some places seem so touristy that we HAVE to try them (read: The Crab Shack – live alligators and exotic birds – What?!).  But here is a selection of bites we’ve tried and enjoyed so far:

One of our first evenings walking we were both craving sushi. We stopped in Wasabi's on MLK Jr. Blvd. We enjoyed steamed edamame, hamachi nigiri, and these rolls (the Oh My God roll and the Savannah Beach roll). All were exceptional and we look forward to going back one more time.

Downtown Savannah has a couple of pizza places, but Your Pie is pretty unique. Think of the process of ordering a sandwich at Subway, and apply it to pizza. We each got to pick our dough and toppings and it was made in front of us, then slid into a wood fired oven to bake. Justin ordered a Thai Pie, and I picked The Great White. Both were very yummy.

The first time we stopped at Mabel Francis Potter's Cupcake Emporium there was a line out the door, but as we were out walking today all was quiet, so we stopped in for a sweet. We chose a Snickerdoodle Cupcake and a Mabel's Special Butter Cupcake. The cake was light and fluffy with a nice tight crumb, and the buttercream was made with real butter. The Mabel's Butter cupcake tasted like a Twinkie to me, if a Twinkie was made with real ingredients. :)

We kept seeing absolutely crazy Zaxby's commercials starring Rachel Dratch, and when we were out and about yesterday we decided to stop in and see how their chicken sandwiches compare to Chick-fil-a. Verdict? We both liked the sauce and the chicken was really quite good. Definitely another great fast food option while traveling, but not quite Chick-fil-a.
