The Best Buffet in Vegas. Period.

We enjoyed another sunny, beautiful day today. We walked to and had breakfast at the Bouchon Bakery in the Venetian (fantastically delicious), walked through the Palazzo, did a bit of gambling on a few nickel slots, then took the monorail down to the MGM, walked through to New York New
York, onto the Monte Carlo, then back to Vdara for the afternoon, swimming and watching the Packers (barely) beat the Vikings. And all that was great, but this post focuses on our dinner, which we just returned from. We couldn’t really decide what we all wanted exactly, so we ended up going with a buffet, and the closest buffet was Wicked Spoon in the Cosmopolitan. In short, it was incredible. It was pricey, but in the end, we all agreed it was worth it. So many choices, each so delicious, and many choices we never imagined could make it onto a buffet and still be amazing. Bone marrow! Prime rib! Pork rillettes! Beignets! Mussels! Fried chicken! Truffled scallop potatoes! Sushi! Mac and Cheese station! Gnocchi with lamb ragu! Salted Peanut Gelato! Mint Chocolate Gelato with Chocolate Pearls! Strawberry shortcake! Macaroons! And oodles and oodles and oodles more. And everything was delicious and refined in a way that it could have been served in a very high end restaurant. If you find yourself in Vegas and are looking for a buffet, make a point to visit Wicked Spoon. We’ve been to a few other buffets we thought were very good, and this blew them all out of the water.

A full day, and even fuller stomach!

We had a great day in Vegas today. The weather was absolutely gorgeous, sunny and 85 degrees. We walked (and walked and walked and walked) and ate (and ate and ate) and gambled (and gambled some more) and people watched galore.

A crazy sculpture made out of canoes outside the entrance of the Vdara.

In the Bellagio’s conservatory.

A recreation of a painting done with flowers in the Bellagio.

Trying on some amazing sunglasses, trying to fit in. They didn’t really work with my outfit.

Lunch at Canter’s Deli in Treasure Island. Giant sandwiches and a knish to share. Delicious. And too much.

Taking in a show of the Bellagio fountains and enjoying the sun!

Inside the Wynn. One of my favorite hotels to walk into.

Dinner and Zoozacrackers Deli in the Wynn. We shared Loaded Nachos, Loaded Knish, and Loaded Crispy Potatoes. Our stomachs were soon Loaded!

Ready for the start of Le Reve!

Le Reve’s theater after the show. Simply the most incredible show we’ve seen on The Strip. Highly highly recommended! It may be pricey, but it isn’t rated the best for nothing! So so so amazing!

Walking back to our hotel after the show, we were able to take in a few more songs at the Bellagio fountains. Very entertaining, despite the crushing crowds.

Girls’ Weekend in Vegas!

Mom, Ruth, and I flew out this afternoon for a fun weekend in Vegas! Since the TCO was in Florida this year, we were missing our Vegas fix! Justin suggested we take a weekend away, and he definitely didn’t have to twist our arms or force the issue! We are staying at a new hotel, Vdara, this year, which is an all-suite hotel. With three people, a suite is a good fit. We have already walked ourselves in circles and are figuring out the City Center complex, but we figure we’ll have it down by the time we leave on Monday morning! Here’re are some pictures from the day.

TCO10

Our last two days have been spent in the TopCoder Open competition arena.  Justin (Ghostar) has been blogging for the TCO and covering the programming competitions, and I have been busy with the All In Challenge, helping to organize games and scavenger hunt-type races.

One thing the competitors have enjoyed is the Minute to Win it game as part of the All In Challenge.  Every few hours we hold a different game, taken from the Minute to Win it television show.  In this challenge the competitor had to hold a piece of spaghetti in his mouth and pick up six pieces of penne pasta with it in 1 minute.  Very fun, and lots of laughs.

A Knish, from Carnegie Deli. Delicious!

In addition to the Minute to Win it challenges, and an Amazing Race event held on Tuesday evening, we are tweeting clues on twitter, getting competitors to race around The Mirage and take pictures of different locations.  It has been fun watching some of the competitors see a new tweet, and then race down the hallway to be the first to solve the clue.  One of the clues was the picture above: What is that? And where can I get one?

Las Vegas Favorites

Our day was mainly our own today, apart from a few meetings to prepare for the start of the TCO.  We spent several hours walking outside and through a few of our favorite spots, as well as exploring a few new ones.

Breakfast this morning was an easy choice.  We walked across Las Vegas Boulevard to The Venetian to the Bouchon Bakery.  We found this spot last year, and will always make a point of stopping there at least once from now on!  We selected a few breakfast sweets, including a cheese danish and this cinnamon bun.

After losing $5 on quarter slots in the Venetian Casino (Justin forced me, though I didn’t put up too much of a fight ;-) we walked over to The Bellagio.  The Bellagio atrium garden is always one of our favorites.

Every year that we have come it has a different theme and we always spend some time marveling at the plants and decorations.  There were five or six GIANT (real) pumpkins displayed, as well as some impressive curly trees and gorgeous glass leaves hanging from the ceiling.

From the Bellagio we continued walked and found ourselves at the new Tram Station to the brand spankin’ new City Center complex.  We had a few minutes to wait for the Tram, and I have photographic proof that my husband can smile normally into a camera.  :)

We exited the Tram at the Crystals and Aria station, and walked through the shops and up and down escalators through the new spaces.  Really, I enjoyed walking around the exterior a bit more – it seemed more impressive from the outside than from the inside, but these water tornadoes were fun to watch for awhile.

Dinner was a special event that was planned ahead of time – reservations at Bouchon.  And it was exceptional.  Delicious.  Fun.  New.  Amazing.

Salmon Rillettes. A mixture of butter, fresh salmon, smoked salmon, lemon and creme fraiche. Totally did not know what we were ordering, and were rewarded with an amazing starter.

My dinner - Gnocchi with spinach, tiny tomatoes, and sweet peppers. sooooo goooood.

Justin's dinner. Pan seared Day Boat Scallops with Jura poached Fuji Apples and Meyer Lemon Beurre Blanc. Close-your-eyes-and-moan good.

We only come here once a year. No joke we're ordering dessert! Profiteroles with Vanilla Bean Ice Cream and Valrhona Chocolate Sauce, and in the background, Chocolate Bouchons with Banana Ice Cream and Caramelized Bananas. Worth it.

After dinner we enjoyed walking and talking with people at the opening reception of the TopCoder Open.  The competitions and events start first thing tomorrow morning!

Bouchon

When we were in Las Vegas, Julie and I ate at Bouchon at the Venetian for dinner. Julie had eaten there before a couple of years ago, and was excited to go again. I looked at the menu and was definitely excited to give it a try. Plus, we had a 15% coupon for the restaurant that we got at the bakery, so that helped, because we knew it *definitely* wasn’t going to be cheap.

The restaurant had a very cool feel to it. Not too “uppity” that I was uncomfortable, but nice. The waiter was friendly, attentive and helpful. It overlooked one of the garden and pool areas at the hotel. There were nice big windows to let a lot of light in.

Right away, they brought out bread and toasted pistachios for us to munch on.

The waiter explained the specials for us to consider. We got three of the items on the specials menu – an appetizer, an entree and a desert.

We split the “duck pressee” appetizer. It was duck wrapped in applewood smoked bacon and then cooked “en sous vide“, which Thomas Keller is pretty famous for doing in his restaurants. It was served with sunchokes and a huckleberry sauce. It was awesome. We started eating it before remembering to take a picture, so the picture is of the appetizer half finished :)

For the entrees, I ordered the scallops special (scallops are one of my favorite foods). It was scallops (flown in fresh from Maine that day) over caramelized endives and an abalone steak, with a carrot curry butter sauce. I hadn’t ever had abalone before, so it was a new food to try, which is always fun. Abalone was definitely an interesting thing to eat, kind of chewy, with a distinct flavor. It matched the rest of the food nicely. The whole thing came out served in an All-Clad dish, which was kind of cool.

Julie had the “steak frites”. It was a flatiron steak (probably our favorite steak at the moment), with maitre’d hotel butter and home made fries. The steak was perfectly cooked, and the fries were amazing. Needless to say, both got finished completely.

For desert we had probably one of the best desert dishes we can remember. We ordered the “bouchons”, which was three small brownies, each topped with a different flavor of ice cream – vanilla, mint chip, and peanut butter. When the waiter was describing it and mentioned fresh peanut butter ice cream, I knew that Julie wouldn’t want anything but that desert.

The vanilla ice cream was very good, but got overshadowed by how great the other two were. The mint ice cream didn’t taste artificially “minty”, it tasted more like mint leaves. Based on what we could tell, they used fresh pureed mint leaves to add the flavor, which gave it a distinct taste that was awesome. The peanut butter ice cream was incredibly creamy and tasted amazing – it was probably the best of the three.

Overall it was an awesome experience that will definitely happen again the next time we are in Vegas.

Tastes of Vegas

Yum. I think you could eat at a different restaurant, deli, or bakery for every meal, every day of the week for a year, and still not a make a dent on everything there is to taste in Las Vegas, even if you just limit it to the Strip! We’ve already had multiple fantastic meals and snacks, from New York pretzels, Hagen Daas Ice Cream, the Buffet at Mandalay Bay, and a Rice Krispie treat the size of my face. Here are some of the more interesting bites we’ve taken:
This is a Parisian Macaroon from Bouchon Bakery in the Venetian. This bakery is the bomb. Phenomenal. Everything looks beautiful and exquiste. Their Cheese Danishes are unbeatable. Parisian Macaroons seem to be all the rage at the moment. I see them on all sorts of blogs and in cookbooks, but have never had one (and didn’t want to try to make them until I knew what the result was supposed to be). And after having one that is reputed to be among the best, I’m not sure I’m a fan. They are beautiful and unique, but the flavor was similar to a Skittle candy! With a texture in between chewy and airy. Definitely interesting.
We also stopped at Canter’s Deli in Treasure Island for lunch a couple of days ago. And all tried REAL pastrami for (we all think) the first time. It was ridiculously good, bordering on obsene. The sandwiches were monstrous. But yet, you still wished you could fit more into your tummy for how delicious it was! Ruth is determined to get one more sandwich (all to herself!) before we leave.
We’ll see what happens across our palates tomorrow!

Vegas, Baby!

After a day of driving and flying, we are HERE. Lights, Crowds, Traffic, Noise, Food, Fun. I’m feeling strangely overwhelmed, even having been here twice before. Maybe it’s the Saturday evening crowds (we happened upon the line waiting for Fleetwood Mac – chaos), maybe just from the traveling. I feel it is too early to be in my room on a weekend night in Vegas, but yet I am oh-so-thankful to be in my room on a weekend night in Vegas. The weather is beautifully warm, and the forecast is near perfection. Our hotel room windows look out on the New York New York roller coaster and the intersection that has NYNY, the MGM Grand, the Tropicana, and the Excaliber. It really is something to see at night – all lit up and exciting. I am looking forward to the day and week ahead. Also, so far we have only lost $4.50 gambling. We controlled ourselves. Today. :)
