Reconnecting in The Woodlands

As we are heading toward San Antonio, we made a point to fit in a couple days to stop in The Woodlands to visit Justin’s brother Travis and his wife Emily, as well as the friends we have made in this area just north of Houston.

Brothers! Having lunch at Central Market in Houston.

We are enjoying this family time, hanging out, sharing some meals, exploring Houston, and petting kitties.

Justin met our friend Katie's cat Tozer, and got his kitty fix for the day, though I think his desire for another cat has now increased exponentially.

We are also getting in some good eats!

Pistachio Bubbies

Trav and Em introduced us to Bubbies ice cream, which is ice cream, formed and wrapped in mochi, a glutinous rice paste, with a consistency similar to rolled fondant or marzipan.  These were really delicious, though the texture took just a minute to get used to, kind of like biting through a Starburst candy.

Yummy, and sturdy, Sprinkles cupcakes. This was after I dropped the box upside down in the street - whoops!

And while we were out and about today we stopped at Sprinkles for cupcakes after lunch.  Quite tasty, and the Lemon Coconut was especially well received by the guys, though I will always be partial to chocolate and peanut butter!

Good Eats of Savannah – Part 1

As you most likely have guessed, one of the things we are loving while in Savannah is trying new restaurants.  We’re scouring Yelp, Urbanspoon, and other reviews sites for good places to try, and just happening upon other places that we add to our list.  We’re trying to veer away from anything too touristy (read: Paula Dean’s), though some places seem so touristy that we HAVE to try them (read: The Crab Shack – live alligators and exotic birds – What?!).  But here is a selection of bites we’ve tried and enjoyed so far:

One of our first evenings walking we were both craving sushi. We stopped in Wasabi's on MLK Jr. Blvd. We enjoyed steamed edamame, hamachi nigiri, and these rolls (the Oh My God roll and the Savannah Beach roll). All were exceptional and we look forward to going back one more time.

Downtown Savannah has a couple of pizza places, but Your Pie is pretty unique. Think of the process of ordering a sandwich at Subway, and apply it to pizza. We each got to pick our dough and toppings and it was made in front of us, then slid into a wood fired oven to bake. Justin ordered a Thai Pie, and I picked The Great White. Both were very yummy.

The first time we stopped at Mabel Francis Potter's Cupcake Emporium there was a line out the door, but as we were out walking today all was quiet, so we stopped in for a sweet. We chose a Snickerdoodle Cupcake and a Mabel's Special Butter Cupcake. The cake was light and fluffy with a nice tight crumb, and the buttercream was made with real butter. The Mabel's Butter cupcake tasted like a Twinkie to me, if a Twinkie was made with real ingredients. :)

We kept seeing absolutely crazy Zaxby's commercials starring Rachel Dratch, and when we were out and about yesterday we decided to stop in and see how their chicken sandwiches compare to Chick-fil-a. Verdict? We both liked the sauce and the chicken was really quite good. Definitely another great fast food option while traveling, but not quite Chick-fil-a.
