Tortillas, Tamales, and Bunuelos, Oh My!

On my way into the fitness center this morning, I noticed a message/cork board outside of it with all sorts of restaurant menus, offers for dog-sitting services, and notices for yoga classes.  But one hand-written paper really grabbed my attention, recommending Sanitary Tortilla, just a few blocks away, for fantastic tamales, tortillas, chips, and other handmade, Mexican fixings for meals.  As the weather is gorgeous again today, we decided to walk over around lunch time, pick up a few things, and bring them back to the apartment to eat.

Pork Tamale and a fresh tortilla piled with Barbacoa and green tomatilla salsa.

And WOW, were we blown away by the little storefront, and later, the food.  They had freshly made Barbacoa (beef), Carnitas (pork), Tamales (with pork filling), tortillas, chips, salsa, Chicarrones (fried pork cracklings), and sweets.  We seriously had a hard time limiting our choices, though pretty much agreed we would be returning next weekend, and so we didn’t have to buy EVERYTHING at once.  We settled on a lunch special of barbacoa, tortillas, salsa, and a soda, but then also added a small package of bunuelos (fried tortillas, covered in sugar and cinnamon, like Cinnamon Toast Crunch on steroids) and some tamales.  All for under $20.  And everything was spectacular.  And we definitely have enough leftovers to last us a few days.

A newly landscaped portion of the RiverWalk.

After lunch, we definitely needed to stretch out our tummies and went for a nice walk along the Southern end of the RiverWalk.  Lots of other walkers, joggers, and bikers had the same idea for the afternoon, enjoying the sun and sound of the water.

San Antonio’s Welcome.

I have to admit, I have been feeling very homesick over the last week or so.  So many short visits, repacking the car, trying to do laundry in the sink here and there, very little internet onboard the ship, lots of driving, and too much fast food definitely left us a bit road-weary and missing our home and familiar faces of friends and family.  And since we’ve down so little research into San Antonio and the neighborhood where our VRBO rental was located, I was feeling a bit of nerves about getting around, if we would be able to walk around easily, etc, which only increased my desire to simply go home.

But then we arrived.

The warmth and mugginess enveloped us as we walked toward the downtown along the River Walk.

Judson Candy Factory Lofts - our home away from home for the next month.

We stopped ourselves short of exploring well into the night, and instead picked up some ramen to take back to the condo to eat.  The nice layout of the condo, the closeness of the River Walk, the immediate sense of comfort walking around, and we both feel rejuvenated.  We’re excited to stay in this beautiful city for a bit (though I am still glad we are only a month away from coming home)!
