The Coast.

I simply cannot get enough of this.

Or this.

Or this.

And neither can Buddy!

Gloomy.

River Street and one of the cruising paddle boats from the ferry.

A storm and rain system has moved in over Savannah, chasing away the sun and warm temperatures.  It is hard for me to clear my head of sleep on days like this.  But we ventured out despite the pallor, and took a river ferry ride over to the Savannah Convention Center to walk through the Home and Garden show that is taking place.

Looking out over the river, the ferry, and River Street from the Convention Center.

The expo was a bit of a bust and not worth the money we paid to get in, but I enjoyed being out on the water for the ferry crossing, even if it only takes a few minutes.

Alligator Soul

Alligator Soul restaurant is pretty much as close to our condo as you can get, just a half block’s walk.  Based on the overwhelmingly positive reviews we had read, we thought it was well worth making reservations and walking over for dinner.  We were welcomed immediately upon entering and made to feel right at home as we were seated at our table.  Seemingly well known for their cocktails, I challenged the staff pretty much right away by requesting a non-alcoholic cocktail.  They were quite happy to oblige and send out a fantastic fruity blend of frothy pineapple juice and hibiscus syrup.

After hearing the specials for the evening, we chose to start our meal with a Charcuterie platter of housemade roasted and smoked meats and fish, a cheese plate of locally made cheeses and honey, and Alligator Bites – deep fried bits of alligator tail.  We thoroughly enjoyed and lingered over these appetizers for awhile.

Though as soon as our entrees arrived, we knew we had over-ordered.  I couldn’t resist trying the Shrimp and Grits.  And it was crazy delicious, without a doubt.  But I had wished I had ordered the appetizer portion, especially when Justin mentioned dessert!  I must say though, the grits reheated beautifully the next day for dinner!

Justin ordered the Amaretto and Espresso glazed Scallops and Grits and out came the largest scallops either of us had ever seen.  And like the Shrimp and Grits, they were exceptional.  Perfectly cooked and so delicious.  But also a very large portion.

For dessert our server highly recommended the Fig and Port glazed Cheesecake, and we also decided to try the Banana Beignets.  And both were phenomenal.  We would highly recommend saving some room in your tummy to fit dessert into your evening!  The staff at Alligator Soul guaranteed we had a terrific meal and time in their restaurant home.  We just needed to extend our evening walk by a few blocks to make up for such a filling and decadent Southern meal!

Good Eats of Savannah – Part 1

As you most likely have guessed, one of the things we are loving while in Savannah is trying new restaurants.  We’re scouring Yelp, Urbanspoon, and other reviews sites for good places to try, and just happening upon other places that we add to our list.  We’re trying to veer away from anything too touristy (read: Paula Dean’s), though some places seem so touristy that we HAVE to try them (read: The Crab Shack – live alligators and exotic birds – What?!).  But here is a selection of bites we’ve tried and enjoyed so far:

One of our first evenings walking we were both craving sushi. We stopped in Wasabi's on MLK Jr. Blvd. We enjoyed steamed edamame, hamachi nigiri, and these rolls (the Oh My God roll and the Savannah Beach roll). All were exceptional and we look forward to going back one more time.

Downtown Savannah has a couple of pizza places, but Your Pie is pretty unique. Think of the process of ordering a sandwich at Subway, and apply it to pizza. We each got to pick our dough and toppings and it was made in front of us, then slid into a wood fired oven to bake. Justin ordered a Thai Pie, and I picked The Great White. Both were very yummy.

The first time we stopped at Mabel Francis Potter's Cupcake Emporium there was a line out the door, but as we were out walking today all was quiet, so we stopped in for a sweet. We chose a Snickerdoodle Cupcake and a Mabel's Special Butter Cupcake. The cake was light and fluffy with a nice tight crumb, and the buttercream was made with real butter. The Mabel's Butter cupcake tasted like a Twinkie to me, if a Twinkie was made with real ingredients. :)

We kept seeing absolutely crazy Zaxby's commercials starring Rachel Dratch, and when we were out and about yesterday we decided to stop in and see how their chicken sandwiches compare to Chick-fil-a. Verdict? We both liked the sauce and the chicken was really quite good. Definitely another great fast food option while traveling, but not quite Chick-fil-a.

Becoming Routine…

Our favorite things to do each day (besides the rainy ones) is go for a walk (or two).  We might head towards Forsythe Park, or just pick a new street to walk down and go until we decide to turn back.  We tend to come back with a few new pictures, no matter which direction we go, or how often we’ve gone the same way.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Savannah

Our day started with a parade! Savannah’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade came right down Broughton Street.

This was the style of the typical float, though this one made me laugh, as the kid laying on the center platform looked a bit less than alive.

We then headed out with Buddy to Fort Pulaski National Monument, about 15 minutes away.

The Fort has an honest-to-goodness moat all the way around it, complete with drawbridges!

Justin, hanging with the pigeons on the top of the outer wall. "Catching a pigeon" was not checked off his bucket list today.

The fort only has a dozen or fewer cannons in their original positions. It must have been quite the site to have this space filled with them!

An absolutely beautiful-weather day to take in some history and fun.

Orleans Square Fountain

While out walking this morning, Justin and I came across Orleans Square.  It was a cool, quite morning, with very few people out yet (such a nice change from yesterday, when the downtown area was flooded with people).

We took a moment to enjoy the fountain and the stillness.

The absence of people and traffic meant we could take silly pictures without second glances.

I’m looking forward to a relaxing afternoon, cheering on the Packers, and sunlight streaming in the windows.

Colonial Cemetery Park

The temperatures may have dipped a little bit into the 40′s and 50′s for a few days, but the sun is still shining and trying to warm us up.  We enjoy going for walks in the mornings and early evenings, sometimes picking a spot to walk towards, and other times just picking a general direction.  Yesterday we walked over to Colonial Cemetery Park, with headstones and crypts from the late 1700′s and 1800′s.

Savannah is well known for it’s “haunted” cemeteries and homes, but you won’t be seeing this scaredy cat on any of those tours!  Cemeteries are much more like parks during the day, thank you very much!
